Shadow Crawler

Shadow Crawler is a prototype level design and "toy" character for a single player platformer.  Players must escape an abandoned angelic prison- with the help of other mysterious, ancient entities. They must utilize their ability to melt into shadows, snuff out light, and soar through the sky to make their way to freedom.

My Roles

Game Designer:

  • Designed mechanics surrounding the concept of shadows- melting into shade, manipulating the environments lighting, and being damaged by lights themselves.

  • Designed level around mechanics for optimal gameplay by creating progressive obtainment of mechanics and by creating ability locks.  For example, players could obtain the shadow melt ability from the first prisoner they meet, and use this to go under bars and escape.

  • Focused on player engagement with environmental obstacles and enemies over "One-time use" mechanics- making sure that learned abilities such as the shadow blast, a projectile attack, would be used throughout the rest of the level by introducing many light drone enemies.

Game Artist:

  • Created prototype assets for the level, ready to be swapped for polished assets when ready for full development.

Game Developer:

  • Blueprinted full project with Unreal Engine 4- including mechanics, lighting, and enemies.

  • Blueprinted projectile attacks, camera sequences, activated traps and tools, and progressive level access.
